“A mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible”. This beautiful quote by Marion C. Garretty rings true to the power and potency of motherhood.
Studies show that over 90% of people believe that there is no tougher job than being a mom. Moms fill the role of chef, chauffeur, nurse, event planner, teacher, role model, and mediator, just to name a few. Moms are not only responsible for these important roles, but they are also responsible for the emotional health and well-being of every little human who is expected to grow up and be a productive member of society.
Up until a few decades ago, staying at home with the children was commonplace, with over 40% of women staying home in 1970 while their husbands worked. In recent decades, not only did that become financially impossible for many households, but women also yearned to reenter the workplace.
The landslide of women’s rights movements in the late 70s paved the way for women to demand more. From gender equality to equal wages, women asked for what they deserved for getting back into the workforce.
Once women did enter the workforce, they faced the “double duty” - this includes many of the same responsibilities of motherhood as well as full-time work. While it might have been a natural progression for mothers to go to work, it was not as quick of a transition for fathers to take on some of the responsibilities at home. To put this into perspective, only 1% of fathers were “stay-at-home-dads” in the 1970s.
The 2000s was a period when becoming a “stay-at-home-mom” was stigmatized- a choice for those women who failed to pursue their own careers. Seemingly, what was right for the role of the mother was dictated by society’s standards.
The ebb and flow of these social constructs have a profound effect on the choices mothers make. Regardless of a woman’s choice of parenting, the role of society should be to support her and create systems that nurture both mother and child. Whether that means she wants to be a boss in the office or a supermom who chooses to stay home - it is our collective responsibility to create a supportive and conducive community for every mama out there.
At Style Loft Activewear, we believe that every mom should be supported in her choices when it comes to parenting and business. We aim to create a consciousness around respecting every mother’s choice. That being said, as a female-owned business, we know the power and the desire that every woman has to do more and provide for her babies. More than ever before, mothers are taking the world of entrepreneurship by storm by starting their own businesses, right from the comfort of their own “stay-at” homes.
We believe that women shouldn’t have to choose between their career and their dedication to their children. Our team of mamas proudly raised their cubs while diving into a variety of industries working from home.
Style Loft Activewear wants to wish all the mama’s out there a very special Mother’s Day. We are sending love and support to all the boss mamas running their household and their empire!
